It is an annual two-day celebration of the culture of the Abasuba people of Kenya. It is held on the last Thursday and Friday before Christmas on Rusinga Island. The word rusinga comes from suba wrd ELUZINGA, meaning island. The lous gave them the name SUBA after the fled from Uganda. Suba in luo refers to a refer to smaller tribes that have split from their main groups thus as luhya kisii and kuria The festival began in 2012 which was founded by Anne Eboso AND CHULAcultural foundation group. The cultural festival is the sole initiative preserving the culture of the Abasuba who are mainly found on the Rusinga Island and Mfangano Island on Lake Victoria on the Kenyan portion of the Lake. the abasuba community is believed to have origanitaed from uganda 500 years ago and settled in the island of mfangano island and rusinga island. The festival addresses societal ills within the Abasuba community such as the sex-for-fish practice that impacts negatively on efforts to curb the spread of HIV, which has a 26% hiv in 2016. With estimated population of 30.000 the community mostly engage in fish farming in small scale and subsistence farming ( maize and millet) The festival producer is a long-standing promoter of culture, education and literacy through book-reading. The Rusinga Festival utilizes a boat-library that also serves the purpose of providing a safe space for discussion of various sensitive issues affecting the Abasuba Games played in the festival include westling (eminyiika) board game (oluko/oruko/ajua) tug of war and boat riding. Traditional cuisines that guest enjoy during the festival chicken (gweno) sun-dried meat(aliya) and fish. The museum also houses a section dedicated to tom Mboya a prominent leader born in rusinga island.
